In fact, we guide each of our clients through their project from commencement to completion in order to guarantee a finish that meets every expectation. Plastering is a general building job that our workmen can provide and involves a lot more skill than people realise. Read on as we go over three common plastering mistakes that novices tend to make…

Cheap Tools

Many builders see plastering as an artform because it isn’t a skill that can be picked up overnight. With that said, the very best tools can make a world of difference to a finished project as cheap trowels and hawks won’t last a single year and are more likely to result in a poor-quality finish. This same principle can actually be applied to other industries as a professional photographer can’t excel with the basic settings of an iPhone nor can a runner run a marathon with basic footwear. As a result, investing in quality plastering tools will result in a much better finish.

Lack of Preparation

There is a common misconception that plastering involves the simple application of a few coats of paste. In reality, construction workers must follow several preparation steps before the plaster is applied to a wall. For instance, a sheet should be placed on the ground in order to protect it from any spillage, and any cracks or holes need to be covered with screen tape in order to ensure that the plaster lays evenly. Furthermore, a diluted PVA layer in a ratio of 1:4 of glue and water should be applied in order to create a surface for the plaster to bond to before the first layer of plaster is applied. These steps are important because failing to prepare can result in an uneven and poorly-plastered wall, which may delay the next step of construction.

Rushing

Construction is a busy industry and there are dozens of different things that can set a worker back, forcing them to carry out some projects in a limited time frame. With this said, plastering is a skill that should never be rushed as this approach is unlikely to result in a smooth finish. After all, not only does rushing put a company’s reputation on the line, but it can affect the quality of a plastered wall and usually creates more work because the entire thing has to be redone.

Plastering is a basic building process that every construction worker should be able to carry out to a high-standard.
