Why Are Hard Hats Necessary on Construction Sites?

By 21st August 2020Blog

There are many risks on a building site that can pose a threat to both new and experienced workers which is why each and every individual must operate in accordance with strict health and safety guidelines. In fact, hard hats are one of the most integral aspects of construction and are a fundamental necessity for each builder, regardless of whether they are landscaping a garden or constructing a skyscraper. Read on as we assess why hard hats are so important on construction sites…

Regulations

Construction can be incredibly dangerous which is why every building site must follow strict rules and regulations. In fact, hard hats are a legal and professional requirement according to 1910.135(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Standard which states that “The employer shall ensure that each affected employee wears a protective helmet when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects”. This tells us that employees don’t necessarily need to understand why hard hats are integral and that it is the responsibility of the on-site manager to ensure that every individual on a construction site is wearing one at all times.

How do hard hats provide protection?

In layman’s terms, a hard hat prevents injuries and ensures that workers are safe at all times on a construction site. After all, the rigid shell is incredibly tough and made to resist or deflect any blows to the head that may come about from falling objects or work spaces with restricted headroom. In addition to this, some hard hats also provide shock absorption or act as an insulator against electrical currents. Finally, they also protect the eyes, nose and ears from harm and prevent splashes or spills from causing any lasting damage.

Here at Millgrove Construction, our construction workers are trained to follow every health and safety regulation, both on and off site, as the project managers guide our clients through each step of their project carefully. In fact, we take great pride in our scrupulous approach to detail yet also recognise the futility of construction if it is carried out with blatant disregard for health and safety regulations like hard hats.
